Where to find the brown gold
Damodan Bhatta explained on our trip from Bakthapur to Kodari ( Tatopani ) how and where to find shilajit by showing us some examples on the rocks we passed.
The shilajit substance comes out of the rocks of variable consistency. Although the black gelatinous paste we saw clinging on the rocks was from last year and looked very dry it gave us a good understanding of what to look for.
Best time to collect shilajit is May - July. This herbomineral comes out of the rocks after rainfall and when the rays of the sun heat it up. As steeper the rocks as better. Most of the times it has to be hammered out of the crevice.
Different kinds of shilajit do exist gold ( red ), silver ( with ), copper ( blue ) and black iron which is the mainly used in therapeutic properties and most expensive. The general appearance of shilajit is that of a compact mass of vegetable organic matter composed of a dark- brown gummy matrix interspersed with vegetable fibers, sand and earthy matte.
However after extract has taken place there are different ways of purifying. To get the best quality the shilajit is to be placed in between to inclined glass plates sun will eventually melt it and the impureness will remain on the glass plates. Other purification process and more common as it is quicker, is to cook the shilajit with cow urine and the filtered with linen.
The purest black shilajit found in Nepal is in Baglung District between a altitude of 1000 m - 5000 m. Other districst like Gorkha District, Dolpa District and Darchula District offer also shilajit but with a slightly less quality.
This herbomineral preparation has to taken with hot milk alternatively water. Best effect achieved when taking it during 7 weeks about total of 48 g. It produces rejuvenating and aphrodisiac effects and cures diseases. Caraka Samhita even states that there is no curable disease in the universe, which is not effectively cured by shilajit when it is administered at the appropriate time and dose.
It can be to be mixed with Ashvagandha for men and Shatavari women ( improve ojas ) or Gokhsura ( UTI caused by Vata and Kapha ). Actions in the body that take place diuretic, antiseptic, general tonic, blood purifier, laxative, relieve pain. Shilajit effects the nerve and reproductive tissues and the urinary, nervous and reproductive systems. It also has specific action on the endocrine system. It also strengthens agni (digestive fire) and reduces ama (toxins).
The discovery of shilajit by humans can be attributed to Himalayan monkeys, which migrated to higher mountains to lick this material out of rock crevices. Some Ayurveda practitioners observed the monkeys and found them to have better digestive health, occurrence of sex, and displayed higher levels of memory.
